EIZO Releases ColorNavigator API for Developers to Integrate Monitor Color Management Operations into Creative Software Applications

Hakusan, Japan, September 12, 2023 – EIZO Corporation (TSE: 6737) today released the latest version of its ColorNavigator 7 color management software, making the API (Application Programming Interface) available to software developers and system managers.

Creative professionals in a wide of industries, including photography, video, print, and more, use a variety of image editing and design software programs for their work. When adjusting parameters for a project, the monitor’s color space, brightness, and other characteristics must also align with the settings of the software application to ensure accuracy. To achieve this, users must adjust settings within their creative software as well as separately through the dedicated color management software or monitor on-screen display (OSD). To streamline this, EIZO has made its ColorNavigator API available to software developers and system managers to integrate monitor color management and calibration functions into third-party applications.

ColorNavigator 7 is EIZO’s propriety software solution that allows users to calibrate their ColorEdge color management monitor to maintain color accuracy, switch between color modes to suit different creative projects, and fine-tune color parameters for color-critical work. The integration of ColorNavigator 7 effectively allows third-party applications to perform certain monitor management functions without requiring the user to operate ColorNavigator 7 in a separate window.1 ColorNavigator 7 functions that are available with the API include changing the color mode, creating a new calibration target, executing or canceling SelfCalibration2, retrieving calibration results, and more. This streamlines the user experience by making essential color management operations accessible directly from the active creative application.

For example, in video post production, switching from SDR to HDR requires the user to manually change both the software application and monitor settings to the appropriate display mode. Not only does this require multiple steps, but if a setting is missed, the viewing environment is no longer accurate. Studios could use the ColorNavigator API to write a script3 to perform functions directly from within their chosen editing software - in the case of Foundry NukeTM digital compositing and visual effects software, this could allow editors to easily change the monitor’s color mode and current project settings in a single click and without leaving the Nuke interface.

Nigel Hadley, Product Manager – Nuke and Nuke Timeline tools commented, “EIZO’s innovative ColorNavigator API is exciting as HDR monitoring continues to gain traction. With their cross-platform support across Linux, Windows, and Mac, this is ideal for our shared global customers. We're excited to start collaborating on enhancing HDR accessibility in the Nuke family of products across the pipeline.”

The ColorNavigator API also opens up the possibility of not only changing color modes and display settings through third-party software, but also retrieving important calibration information, such as that which is needed in a print proofing system to verify color accuracy status. This could be done directly through the proofing system by using a script to perform such a function. Developers of other applications, such as those used for video editing, color grading, digital graphics, and even remote control, could use the API to perform functions or retrieve information from ColorNavigator 7 in a way that meets specific end-user needs and workflows.
