EIZO to Participate in Crewless Autonomous Ship Demonstration Aiming for World's First Successful Trial
Hakusan, Japan, June 18, 2020 – EIZO Corporation (TSE: 6737) announced that it will participate in the Designing the Future of Full Autonomous Ship (DFFAS) project – a project sponsored by the Nippon Foundation (Japan) which aims to conduct the world’s first successful crewless autonomous ship demonstration. As a member of the DFFAS project, EIZO will contribute solutions for the capture, distribution, and display of images as part of the ship’s emergency remote operations system.
The DFFAS project aims to be the first in the world to achieve successful demonstration of a crewless coastal ship in support of cultivating technological advancement in this sector. To achieve this, a comprehensive system capable of automating docking/undocking, carrying out operations according to the route plan, ship-to-shore data communication, vessel diagnostics and surveillance, and emergency remote operation is critical. A consortium of 22 companies formed to develop this automated system which will allow the ship to safely function even in congested waters.
EIZO’s role in this project is developing a capture, distribution, and display solution which will be an integral part of the ship’s emergency remote operations system. EIZO’s own ultra-high sensitivity cameras, which are suitable for capturing high-quality images outdoors during the day or at night, will be installed to monitor the ship’s surroundings as well as gauges and engine room statuses. Images captured by the cameras will be efficiently transmitted via satellite to a land-based operation center in real time through EIZO’s own video network solution where they will be displayed on multiple FlexScan monitors for operator review. Furthermore, EIZO will provide its unique visibility enhancement technology, which carries out pixel-by-pixel analysis of transmitted images and adjusts them for maximum clarity, in a new hardware solution. This provides a full solution for image capture, distribution, and display to ensure the operators see what is important clearly and in real time for the safe and efficient remote operation of the vessel.
EIZO’s participation in this project is supported through a subsidy from the Nippon Foundation.
