Eric Dinardi - Achieving Perfect Color in Professional Photography
Eric Dinardi began his photography journey with a passion for capturing every genre imaginable – weddings, portraits, food, products, and commercial projects. Starting with minimal resources, a basic entry-level camera, low-quality lighting, and an old computer, he built his company from the ground up.
As his business grew, so did his ambitions. Eric’s work expanded from traditional photography into broader applications such as printing, book production, video, graphic design, TV commercials, and digital media. With this growth, however, came recurring challenges with color accuracy.
Through trial and error, Eric upgraded his cameras, lighting, and computer systems, eventually moving to a PhaseOne medium format camera and Broncolor lighting. Yet, even with top-of-the-line equipment, achieving the true neutral reference for color remained elusive. Unwanted light leaks and subtle environmental factors often introduce color inconsistencies, especially critical when producing large prints like billboards.
Discovering EIZO
Eric’s breakthrough came at shootSin 2016, an exhibition held in Singapore, where he encountered EIZO’s ColorEdge monitors. The self-calibration capabilities impressed him immediately. For the first time, he realized that the solution to his persistent color challenges wasn’t in the camera or lighting, but in a calibrated monitor that could provide consistent, neutral color from capture to print.
Integrating EIZO into his workflow – from photoshoot to editing, graphic design, and printing – transformed his process. Colors could now be accurately represented and maintained throughout production, eliminating guesswork and reducing wasted materials.
Food Photography
In food photography, achieving “fresh but real” colors are paramount. Lighting must be controlled, and subtle nuances in texture must be preserved. Using EIZO, Eric could rely on a perfectly neutral grey balance during shoots, ensuring the colors captured in-camera matched the final edited output. This allowed his photos to maintain natural, appetizing tones consistently.
The Process
During a photoshoot, Eric uses a grey card to achieve neutral grey balance. His EIZO monitor then displays the true colors captured by the camera. After fine-tuning, the output files are prepared in sRGB or Adobe RGB for further use.
Eric’s ideal photoshoot environment requires consistent lighting, a clean environment with predictable light reflections, and a color chart for accurate color adjustments. Without a neutral, calibrated monitor, color distortions can occur – this makes his ColorEdge monitor a must.
Product Photography
Product photography often demands precise color reproduction or variations according to exact client specifications, such as car paint codes. With EIZO, Eric could create accurate color references and adjust sensitive colors like yellowish whites with confidence, thanks to the monitor’s 10-bit display and uniformity. Even minor reflections, sunlight, or environmental factors became easy for him to detect and correct. Gradation adjustments, critical in product photography, were rendered precisely, reducing errors and saving time.
Mixed lighting can also be a challenge. Sunlight, reflections, or other light sources can subtly affect a photo. Eric finds it easier to detect these small details, though not obvious, on an EIZO monitor, making color editing and adjustments much more manageable. Eric and his team are able to confidently showcase their color adjustment capabilities to agencies and designers. With EIZO, the entire process runs efficiently, eliminating unnecessary repeated color corrections.
Eric often invites clients to collaborate on color matching using his ColorEdge monitor.
