Xue Dong - Landscapes, Light, and Creative Judgement

image01

As a professional photographer, Wangjifeixia (Xue Dong) is well known for capturing landscapes in China. He spends at least three months annually on photographing to stay active on the scene and provide his pictures as a writer or columnist for special travel and photography magazines. He has established workshops in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen to share his experiences in photography and now has over 10,000 students.

In this interview, he shares his favorite works and how his ColorEdge monitors support his creative vision.

Share with us your favorite series of works and what makes them special.

Recently, my favorite new series is a collection of aurora photographs I took in Iceland and Norway. These past few years coincided with a peak in solar activity, and the auroras entered an active cycle that allowed me to experience exceptionally powerful and beautifully shaped displays multiple times.

Seeing them on location is truly awe‑inspiring. The aurora shifts and flows across the sky, with its colors and structures changing every moment. When the lights appear against Iceland’s unique landscapes or Norway’s fjords, the sense of depth and scale becomes something no single element can create on its own. For me, this series is not just a record of rare natural phenomena. It also feels like a stroke of luck in my life.

As a landscape photographer, what do you consider indispensable in the creative process?

I would say judgment. Not judgment about equipment, but about light, surroundings, and the direction of the final image. Landscape photography is not simply about waiting for good weather. Many powerful images come from complex or imperfect conditions.

On site, you must quickly decide which elements to keep and which to remove, which color relationships matter and which distract. This same judgment continues into post‑processing.

If you cannot accurately assess color, brightness, and detail on your monitor, every decision made in the field becomes compromised. That’s why a high‑quality monitor is so essential – it supports both the early shooting stage and the later processing stage.

Why do you choose EIZO monitors?

For me, EIZO is not just a monitor. It is part of my professional standard. My work spans different regions and equipment, and my images must perform consistently in high‑end printing and across platforms in various countries. In this situation, what I value most is not appearance alone but stability, consistency, and reliability.

EIZO gives me that peace of mind. I never need to question whether the monitor is beautifying the image. I can focus entirely on the creative process. Once that level of trust is established, it is very difficult to replace.

What has been your experience with ColorEdge monitors?

For me, my CG319X and CG2700X continue to represent ultimate reliability. Their color depth, grayscale gradation, and highlight detail are extremely accurate to the final output.

When editing high dynamic range landscape scenes, especially for complex scenes, such as dawn, dusk, snowfields, clouds, or auroras, I can clearly judge which details are real and which are approaching the limits. For someone like me who needs high‑quality results while maintaining a flexible working environment, these two models are ideal creative partners.
