Kanazawa University - 800 FlexScan Monitors and User-Friendly Asset Management Software Used Across Campus for Efficient Administration
Kanazawa University is situated in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan, where a rich nature and traditional culture coexist with modern cityscapes. The university was founded in 1862 as the Kaga Hikoso Vaccination Center and has over 160 years of history and traditions inherited from predecessor schools, such as the former Fourth High School. Throughout its history, the university has played an instrumental role in the advancement of higher education and academic research in Japan, evolving into a leading institution that represents both the country and Kanazawa.
Kanazawa University has been a long-standing user of EIZO monitors for learning and research purposes. In 2023, the university installed 800 multi-functional 23.8-inch FlexScan EV2490 monitors for administrative purposes. We spoke to the personnel in charge regarding the installation and their impressions of the monitors.

USB Type-C Docking to Accommodate New Workstyles
“Previously, our staff used a desktop workstation with EIZO monitors to perform their tasks. However, with the recent adoption of new workstyles, such as telework and satellite offices, we have introduced portable laptops. Given the limited display area of laptop screens and the potential for this to impact work efficiency, we concluded that an external monitor at each desk is still necessary.
“In selecting a new monitor, priority was given to a USB Type-C® connection with power supply capability, allowing employees who carry laptops to start working immediately by connecting with a single cable. Moreover, as we were accustomed to having peripherals such as a LAN cable, mouse, and keyboard connected to our desktop workstations, it was crucial to guarantee a seamless connection when transitioning to a laptop. As a result, we decided to adopt the multi-function EV2490, which is equipped with USB Type-C, a LAN port, and USB docking capabilities.
“The EV2490 provides a stable internet connection to a laptop via USB Type-C. Another convenient feature is the USB docking feature, which allows users to connect a mouse and keyboard directly to the monitor. The EV2490 has been well received by employees who attend meetings and work away from their desks due to its ease of use, allowing them to start working comfortably using a single cable. Furthermore, there is no need to purchase a separate docking station, which helps to keep desks tidier with fewer cables.
“As a security measure, we have implemented MAC address authentication, which restricts access to the university’s network. Through this implementation, a secure wired LAN environment is achieved via the monitor by utilizing the EIZO MAC Address Clone Utility free dedicated software.”

Daisy Chain to Effortlessly Display on Multiple Screens
“Many of the existing EIZO monitors that have been in use for the past five years remain fully functional and reliable, thanks to their high quality and durability. As a result, many staff members are using a multi-monitor setup with the new EV2490 alongside their existing monitor. The daisy chain function of the EV2490 allows for the simple creation of a multi-monitor environment by first connecting the laptop to the EV2490 with a USB Type-C cable and then connecting the second existing monitor to the EV2490 with another USB Type-C cable.* This streamlined setup keeps desks neat and tidy, eliminating the need to reconnect multiple cables to the laptop each time you return to your desk after a meeting or outing.”
*If the existing EIZO monitor does not support USB Type-C, a cable that converts USB Type-C to DisplayPort™ can be used to achieve a daisy chain connection.
“Another benefit of EIZO monitors is the wide range of adjustment available with their stands, allowing it to be positioned to suit the workspace and workstyle of each staff member. The arrangement of the monitors varies among staff; some raise the stand to its highest position and place their laptop underneath the monitor, while others rotate the monitor vertically to better facilitate document viewing.”

Software to Check Monitor Status and Conduct Remote Configuration
“We use EIZO’s Screen InStyle Server software to manage monitors across the university. This software automatically retrieves device information for multiple monitors in real time, allowing administrators to configure them all at once. For instance, in the event that a monitor is not displaying properly, we can remotely verify via Screen InStyle whether the monitor is powered on and if the input signal is correct. Furthermore, we can obtain accurate, real-time information on how many monitors and PCs are actually being used in each department, which can be useful for future equipment updates.
“The small team of system administrators manage all the equipment across the university, including the two main campuses, satellite offices, and administrative monitors at the affiliated hospital. The main campus, Kakuma Campus, is one of the largest single campuses among national universities in the country, so reducing the need to visit installation sites for inspection and configuration changes is extremely helpful.”

Future Outlook and Expectations from EIZO
“Kanazawa University has been using EIZO monitors for about 10 years. Compared to other products, EIZO offers more consistent color, stable image display, and a high quality that we can trust. Additionally, the flicker-free screens are easy on the eyes, and the white housing option helps create a bright and coordinated space, which we find to be pleasing and user-friendly.
“We aim to continue introducing high-quality products to the university, and we look forward to EIZO continuing to provide a comprehensive range of monitors that can flexibly adapt to the diverse learning environments of students and the workstyles of staff. Finally, to optimize the use of the Screen InStyle Server, we would love to see the addition of features such as expanding the remote settings options and enabling department-level configuration changes.”
