What is a liquid crystal display (LCD)?

A liquid crystal display uses flat panel technology as its means of converting video signals to images. The use of liquid crystal materials is considered to offer the most potential as opposed to other flat panel technologies such as plasma, field emission, etc. The first LCDs were electronic calculators and digital watches. Nowadays, LCDs are used in laptop computers and computer displays.
