What is liquid crystal?

Liquid crystal is a substance that is neither liquid nor solid but exists somewhere in between the two. Liquid crystal materials are formed by blending certain base materials (e.g. biphenyls, dioxin) with other materials to obtain various desired properties such as viscosity, elasticity, reflective index, etc.
