Abbreviation for Serial Digital Interface. SDI, SD-SDI, and HD-SDI are types of digital video interfaces used in professional broadcasting to transmit uncompressed, unencrypted digital video signals with or without embedded audio at high bit rates over short distances within production facilities. SDI interfaces standards such as SD-SDI and HD-SDI are determined by SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers). Because SDI signals are unencrypted, licensing agreements restrict their use to professional broadcasting equipment.
