Ritsumeikan University - Empowering Future Creators Through Enhanced Video Production Education
Established in 2007, the College of Image Arts and Sciences at Ritsumeikan University was Japan’s first academic institution dedicated to comprehensive education and research in video production. In 2024, the college relocated from the Kinugasa Campus in Kyoto to the Osaka Ibaraki Campus, aiming to strengthen its presence in the Kansai region and expand its network globally.
As part of this transition, the college installed a 31.1-inch ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 HDR reference monitor, 39 units of ColorEdge CG2700X 4K color management monitors, and 40 units of FlexScan EV2795 27-inch monitors for their video editing lab and editing rooms. We spoke with Associate Professor Hiroshi Yamamoto about the installation and his overall impression of the monitors since their deployment. |

How are the monitors being used?
“In conjunction with our relocation to the Osaka Ibaraki Campus, we established a video editing lab for large-group practical training and lectures, editing rooms for individuals to focus on their work, and a screening room for final color checks and completed videos. Our curriculum covers a wide range – from foundational training in the fundamentals of video production to specialized, hands-on video editing courses. In all these learning environments, having color management monitors that can accurately display color was essential. That’s why we chose to install EIZO monitors.”
“The 27-inch CG2700X 4K HDR monitor was installed in the video editing lab and editing rooms as a preview monitor. Although HDR production is not currently part of our practical training, considering current trends in the video production industry, it is likely that this will change in the future. So, we selected the CG2700X as a forward-looking investment. The CG3146 HDR reference monitor was installed in the screening room for final color checks. Additionally, the 27-inch EV2795 monitors were positioned adjacent to each ColorEdge monitor and are used as work monitors for video editing software tasks.”
Installation Breakdown
Video Editing Lab
This room is used for large-group production workshops and lectures. 31 units each of the CG2700X and EV2795 were installed here.
Editing Rooms
These eight spaces provide an environment where individual students or small groups can focus on editing work. Each room is equipped with a CG2700X and EV2795.
Screening Room
This space is equipped with a cinema projector and used for final checks and color adjustment of videos produced for classes and assignments. The CG3146 and one EV2795 were installed here.
What was the reasoning and context behind your decision?
“At the previous Kinugasa Campus, we had been using three 31.1-inch CG319X 4K monitors since 2018, and we had come to trust their high quality. We liked that the CG319X has a built-in calibration sensor, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and allowing us to focus on our work with confidence in the monitor’s display. It has been about six years since we introduced the CG319X, and we continue to use them even after relocating to the Osaka Ibaraki Campus without issue. We value ColorEdge monitors for their ability to perform accurate calibration with minimal effort, their high image quality, and their reliability. Compared to monitors from other broadcast equipment manufacturers, we also found them to offer better cost performance.”
“Based on my own long-standing experience in the video production industry, I believe that ColorEdge has firmly established itself as the industry standard. Within the university there is a shared desire to provide students with a professional-level environment to learn in. This was a key factor in our decision to proceed with the installation of the 80 new monitors.”
“We chose the ColorEdge CG3146 and CG2700X because they both feature built-in calibration sensors like the CG319X. Additionally, we chose the FlexScan EV2795 as a work monitor for operating video editing software. While color management support is not essential for work monitors, and products from other manufacturers may have sufficed, we chose EIZO because of our established trust in the exceptional quality of their products.”
How has your experience been with the monitors so far?
“The CG2700X offers superior image quality and performance compared to other monitors. The built-in calibration sensor allows for straightforward and precise adjustments, and the monitor offers a comprehensive range of color modes, that can be easily accessed via the buttons on the front bezel. Furthermore, we are pleased they come with a light-shielding hood as standard. In a lab setting, it is often impractical to completely turn off the lights as it would disrupt the progress of the lecture. However, having the light-shielding hood allows us to effectively prevent reflections while keeping the lights on.”
“The CG3146 delivers outstanding image quality as a reference monitor for final color checks. We especially appreciate the deep blacks made possible by its high contrast ratio. Students are very enthusiastic to use the CG3146 to review the works they have created for their graduation projects. Furthermore, the cost-performance has been more favorable compared to other companies’ reference monitors.”
“The EV2795 offers a spacious 27-inch screen that allows us to display video editing software comfortably, making editing work more efficient. It also includes a range of eye-friendly features that are helpful during long editing sessions. All of this makes it an optimal choice as a work monitor.”
What were the benefits of using collective package for the delivery of the 40 FlexScan monitors?
“Due to the limited time between the relocation of the College of Image Arts and Sciences to the new campus and the start of classes, we had to complete delivery and setup of equipment within a short timeframe. EIZO’s collective packaging option, which consolidates multiple monitors into a single box, not only made the delivery process more efficient but also reduced the amount of unpacking and box dismantling work, leading to a significant reduction in labor.” “Moreover, by reducing the number of boxes, we were able to stack the dismantled boxes more neatly for recycling, and the amount of excess packaging material was also minimized, allowing for quick disposal. We feel the collective packaging approach was instrumental in shortening the time required for the installation.” |

What is your outlook for the future, and what are your expectations for EIZO moving forward?
“In the field of video production, particularly in filmmaking, the final color grading process is extremely important. A key prerequisite for this process is that the monitor displays colors accurately, which is critical. We want our students to understand the significance of this and to apply it to their own work, so we plan to include topics such as monitor calibration and color mode settings in future lectures.”
“At the College of Image Arts and Sciences, we rely on EIZO monitors as industry-standard tools for accurate color display, and we hope that EIZO will continue developing innovative and dependable products. Ideally, we would like to see reference monitors installed not only in our screening room but also in our video editing lab and editing rooms. To support this, it would be highly beneficial to have a product from the ColorEdge lineup positioned somewhere between the CG3146 and CG2700X. Beyond product development, we also value and look forward to EIZO’s ongoing support throughout the installation process.”
