EIZO's IP Decoding Box and 486 FlexScan Monitors Installed at KDDI's New Network Service Operations Center

image

In July 2021, KDDI opened a new network service operations center designed to provide reliable communications services, even in the event of a major natural disaster. This new operations center features a fully integrated service operation and monitoring system, making it possible to respond to problems, from detection to recovery, from a single location.

To display surveillance camera images in their control center, KDDI installed six DuraVision DX0211-IP decoding boxes, as well as 177 FlexScan EV3285 and EV2785 large-screen 4K monitors for operators to use in the surveillance room. They also introduced 309 FlexScan EV2460 23.8-inch business monitors to their office space. We asked the lead decision-makers for this project why they chose EIZO and how the solutions assisted in their operations.   Shuichi Migaki

The Deciding Factors: 4K I/O Support and PC-Less Operation for Easy Maintenance

EIZO’s IP Decoding Box for Monitoring Sites Remotely

Migaki: To give operators a solid grasp of the situation at various sites, we need to continuously display high-resolution images, captured by multiple cameras over long periods. It is common to use high-performance PCs to decode such high-resolution images, however those come with their own security management costs, like password management, regular updates, anti-virus measures, and log management. We opted to use EIZO IP decoding boxes because they are a straightforward way to simultaneously display multiple camera images from other sites without needing a PC. This meant that we could have a simplified system that still met security standards while reducing our management costs.   DuraVision DX0211-IP

The DX0211-IP is connected to multiple IP cameras at each location and outputs in 4K resolution to the video wall at the front of the room. We appreciate the fact that the DX0211-IP can display high-resolution images without any downsides like latency. It also enables us to connect to other data centers in Japan through the network, allowing us to share camera images with our head office, as well as locations in Shinjuku, Tama, and Osaka. With the DX0211-IP, acquiring camera images from other locations is a matter of a few simple settings.

Our use case leans more toward monitoring situations rather than preventing crime, so we also found it encouraging that the DX0211-IP has a proven track record in medical institutions and public facilities, which have similar needs. Compared to similar solutions from other companies, we opted for the DX0211-IP because it supports 4K I/O, has a compact size and fanless design, and because it can be operated via remote control or mouse for increased flexibility.

Displaying a Large Volume of Information Simultaneously

FlexScan EV3285 and EV2785 Large-Screen Monitors for Surveillance Room Operators

Migaki: The surveillance room serves as the core of our new network service operations center. The operators here need to be able to see a lot of constantly changing information as they do their work. Our primary requirement for monitors here is that they must be able to display a lot of information at once, at a high pixel density, but also be comfortable to read.

Sasaki: EIZO’s FlexScan EV3285 and EV2785 4K monitors keep small text and images sharp and comfortable to read. The Picture-by-Picture (PbyP) function, which allows multiple PCs to display simultaneously on a single screen, has also been incredibly useful. The EV3285 even allows for dividing the screen into quadrants, which helps operators make the right decisions by comparing information from multiple sources.

Migaki: The frameless, fully flat design gives it a light, minimalistic feel, while leaving plenty of room on the desk. The result is a comfortable operating environment with effective use of space.

KDDI’s Vision for Promoting Diverse Work Styles and Environmental Consideration

FlexScan EV3285 and EV2460 Monitors for the Office Environment

Sasaki: In July 2020, KDDI issued the Declaration of KDDI New Work Styles, which aims to bring about work styles suited to this era of the “new normal.” Through this, each and every employee can deliver results, wherever and whenever they work. We also promote digital transformation internally to improve our offices and IT environment and make diverse work styles a reality. One of these initiatives has been to optimize our office spaces.

In adopting a company-wide hybrid system that combines telecommuting with working in the office, we aimed to create a co-creative office space that unites developers and operators, while simultaneously reducing the number of seats by roughly half compared to the previous office design. For instance, suppose a developer and an operator want to have a conversation while they both look at the same monitor. To make this easier, we chose monitors that could be mounted on arms, so they could be freely adjusted. The result is not only user-friendly, but also brings a visually pleasing sense of consistency to the workspace.

Our primary requirements for office monitors are that they won’t cause eyestrain, and that they will last. These monitors are used over long stretches of time for development work or during disasters, so eye fatigue and hardware failures would cause major problems. EIZO’s monitors were ideal for us because they have features like blue light reduction to make them easier on the eyes, and they are 100% made in Japan and come with a five-year warranty. They also offer excellent after-sales service, which is great for peace of mind if we ever experience hardware issues.

Our secondary requirement for monitors was to keep their environmental impact low. One of our efforts toward achieving SDGs at KDDI has been to promote the use of ICT (information and communications technology) to reduce environmental impact. Naturally, the same goes for the IT equipment we use. The standard power consumption of the EV2460 monitors we installed is just 10 watts, which is 50 - 70% less than most companies’ monitors.

Migaki: One problem we’ve had when buying monitors is that they tend to come with lots of cables and other accessories that we don’t need, many of which are thrown away. For these monitors, though, we had discussions with EIZO about environmental impact and they proposed an eco-friendly packaging idea: the monitors would be shipped to us without stands or cables, and with multiple monitors packed into each box. This proposal was part of why we chose EIZO – this resulted in a 40% reduction in volume compared to shipping in individual boxes, and shipping costs were likewise reduced by more than 20%. We also saved a great deal of time on unpacking and installation with significantly less waste than usual.

EIZO caters to corporate customers’ needs by offering customized packing specifications to help reduce the environmental impact of bulk corporate purchases. This provides the flexibility to meet specific requests like packing multiple monitors in a single box, or not including stands and cables that customers do not need in their installations.

Outlook for the Future and Requests to EIZO

Sasaki: KDDI continues to play a vital role in providing telecommunications, which serve as a lifeline in the event of a disaster. To make our services even more reliable, we will continue to improve our operations and monitoring methods, work to further develop our disaster support measures and communications infrastructure, and facilitate new ways of working that can deliver results wherever and whenever we work.

Migaki: EIZO is one of the few well-established manufacturers in Japan and I hope that they will continue to offer products and solutions that meet high standards of reliability, both domestically and internationally.
